This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing lovers of learning. As the oldest in the school, they strive to be the leaders we know they can be. As leaders of the school climate and culture, they are admired by the rest of the students.
My students range in age from 10-12, are primarily African-American, and unfortunately, they all come from low socioeconomic homes.
100% of my students receive free lunch and breakfast.
Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful one day.
My Project
My district has a new science curriculum which will be printed out onto copy paper--no book. I already know that 10-year-olds are disorganized and lose things and really don't want to see them upset when they lose part of their "book". I will three-hole-punch every page and we will create our "book" together in these sturdy plastic folders. They will be able to write directly into their book (hopefully with a newly sharpened pencil) and that will help facilitate more in-depth learning.
With the help of these folders, my students can create their consumable science "book" and adjust the size once we have completed a topic.
We will have 4 main topics throughout the year, so we can change out the "book" components and lessen the weight. That, in itself, is a help to students who have backpacks that are overly heavy.
