Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"The Sky is the Limit", a painting in the front of my room proclaims. Painted by a local homeless man who is turning his life around, I use this painting to inspire my students (many living in poverty) that they can succeed, no matter their obstacles, with hard work and perseverance.
I have a group of the most eager, motivated, kind-hearted, and engaged students in the world.
I work at a high poverty school, but my students do not let their circumstances affect their attitudes. We are constantly discussing our long-term goals and what it will take to achieve them. I am dedicating myself to them, ensuring that they receive the quality education that they deserve. I want them to have all necessary resources to become successful citizens in the 21st century. My students read on a variety of different levels, but are able to comprehend above their current reading level when read to. In my opinion, reading to a child is one of the joys of parenthood. With this project I hope to give that to all students. We have a class pledge that includes words such as compassion, empathy, advocate, intelligent, curious and resilient. I am seeking all the resources I can get in order to help my students learn these values, truly living them
My Project
The majority of the students at my school do not have the resources to really explore and develop their curiosities, so as their teacher I am deeming it my responsibility to provide them with these resources.
By engaging in a whole-class novel study, students will be able to share their love of reading with their classmates at school, and with their parents at home. These second graders will be reading a chapter each night with their parents. We are encouraging them to curl up together in a quiet, comfortable spot to fully enjoy the beauty of sharing a book. Discussions about the plot, predictions about what will happen next, diving into the characters...all of these are conversations we hope to occur between the children and their parents. The students will then come back to class and participate in class discussions to share what they got from their home reading. Spanish translations will be provided so ALL students and their families will be able to participate.
The improvements that can be made with donations of resources are endless.
By giving each student a copy of this book to take back and forth to their home, they will be empowered and truly feel like they are a part of the group. Donating to this project will impact my students' lives in an amazing way. For students suffering the realities of poverty, a book can be a beautiful and much needed escape. This book is a fantastical and enjoyable journey they will surely remember forever.
