I am requesting materials and funding for a book-making project for my 6th and 7th grade class. We will be learning about our environments and what environmental factors impact our lives, culture, and identity. Students will be writing environmental autobiographies in the form they choose (photo essays, graphic novels, collages, poems) and will publish their autobiography in a book form they choose. We have been learning how to sew, bind and create different types of books, including accordion books, books from recycled materials, sewn pamphlets, etc.
I would like my students to become more aware of their environment, feel more empowered to tell the stories about their lives with pride, and feel more hope in overcoming obstacles they face daily in their environment.
I teach language arts and social studies to middle schoolers--grades 6 to 8. I work in a small, teacher-run public K-8 school in the Excelsior District of San Francisco. More than 70% of our students receive free or reduced price lunch, and a third of our students are English Language Learners. We believe in project-based learning at our school and believe it is an effective way to reach students.
I would like book making materials to complete the project in a professional way. This includes:
- cardboard and special art paper for the final books and book binding cloth,
- cutters and special shape cutters to create images and covers
- sharpies and felt-tip pens/ markers for comics and other covers
There will be 23 students participating in this project, though many more can benefit from the materials we can reuse from this project.
Again, I believe that this environmental autobiography book-making project will be a positive learning experience for my students. They will be authoring their own stories and adding their own creative touch to the project to make, sew, and bind their books into professional-looking final products.
