Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an Inclusion classroom in the West Farms section of the Bronx. My school is in a high needs area, with 99% of students receiving free lunches. I use a Balanced Literacy curriculum in my classroom, which means that my students are given a certain amount of time for Independent Reading each day. Although books are given to us for the children to use, I have found that most of the books I have are too difficult for my very beginning readers. I have tried to make easier books using pictures from magazines, but these do not usually last very long. A Phonics Readers Classroom Library Set comes with books made specifically for emergent readers. The books use basic sight words and each set focuses on a different short or long vowel sound. This kit would not only allow the 25 children in my class to begin the school year with level-appropriate books, but it would give the students who continue to struggle the extra assistance they need to get to the next level. Your funding of this proposal would provide my children with a much needed resource; one that they are not getting with the books we have now. Thank you.
