Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Each week our class will explore a different corner of the planet! Imagine a classroom full of students flying over volcanoes, fault lines, circling polluted oceans, and exploring the streets of sprawling cities. Then from these experiences better understanding how our planet works through in-depth research projects. All of this from the comfort of the classroom using the latest satellite imagery technology through Google Earth! I teach 11th and 12th grade Earth Science at Bronx Leadership Academy, a small (400 students) public high school in the Bronx, NY. What we need is an AV projector so that we can use Google Earth in our classroom to explore our planet every week. Students will use existing laptops as the teacher (or elected student) used the projector to guide the lesson. Without this projector, it is difficult to guide the lesson, especially for those students who are not as familiar with Google Earth software. Most of my students have difficulty understanding concepts in Earth Science. They believe that mountains, soils, and oceans are "out there" and completely irrelevant to their lives. Allowing the students to actively explore the planet will not only keep them engaged in the lesson but will bring what are normally abstract ideas to life.
