I am a teacher of the blind and visually impaired in my county. I travel from school to school. I have a student that is severely visually impaired as well as trainable mentally disabled. She has such a sweet spirit and tries so hard to learn new concepts. This year she learned her alphabet and began working on simple sight words. I would take the couple of words and write simple books using those words and putting pictures to give her visual clues. After months of practice she could follow the left to right progression of reading and was beginning to pick up on for example, "I see a cat." Each page would echo the "I see a _____." She has always loved looking at books but is excited about being able to read the words, too, independently.
It takes a lot of time and materials to make the books. The print must be enlarged as well as have very colorful pictures. The more books I make using the same sight words gives her more practice and also keeps her from getting bored with the same books over and over again. The more words she learns the more books I will need to make. Having colorful books with a binding that enables her to handle them more easily would be a real help.
I want her to be afforded as much positive and exciting instruction as possible. This would bring her not only pleasure, but she would be able to use the information when out in the community as she learns to read more and more words.
