Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an inner city where some take refuge when they are in the classroom. They are eager to learn and love to explore. They come alive when we talk math and science or when we read exciting stories. The conversations they share energize the room and before we know it the end of the day arrives and most don't want to leave. It is every teacher's dream to engage students so much they want to stay.
My students are inquisitive and are constantly engaged in active learning experiences.
They love to collaborate and share ideas. This collaboration meets the needs of all students at all levels, therefore student success is a guarantee. They enjoy helping each other and producing a final product that will WOW their audience.
My Project
Students in my classroom learn while sitting, standing or moving in open space. After I teach the academic content, we move tables and chairs out of the way to implement learning with collaborative challenges. For example, during our engineering and design lesson we learn the function of the 6 simple machines. Then students move tables out of the way to construct their team Rube Goldberg machines. I have rigged some of my large kidney-shaped tables with wheels so that students can move them more easily, but these are still not meeting our needs as the wheels are sometimes displaced in transit.
The physical classroom environment must fit how students are learning in the 21st century.
Whether it is through project based activities or small group discussions, students need flexibility in the classroom to gather in groups depending upon the task. LearnFit sit/stand mobile desks will help make our classroom a better fit for current models of instruction. The mobility of these desks will allow students the flexibility to sit, stand or move to enhance collaboration, discussion and project management.
My students and I are hopeful to add these tools to our classroom.
