The students I teach often don’t have good role models or see themselves positively on the news or in pop culture. Reading is an escape for them. They can identify with characters and learn about themselves. Words are their outlet, and learning how to put them together well will help them find their voice. Books of choice are so important to every learner, but especially struggling learners. There is such a wide variety of topics and diverse authors I want to expose my students to.
My Project
These books will be used in the classroom library, so students will have easy access to diverse authors, in a wide array of topics and genres. Giving students choice in what that read creates life long readers. Giving students choice in what they read helps minority students see themselves in characters and situations. Having a classroom library, will create natural and authentic, literate conversations about books between students. Students reading and writing about what they care about, and are interested in, is my goal as an English teacher. I want students to recommend books to students, do book talks in front of the class, and be able to study authors craft authentically.
