Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is very small, but diverse. We not only have many regular education classes, but also have 5 Special Education classes. Many of my students are from low, socioeconomic backgrounds. Our school is a Title I school. 75% of our students receive free and reduced price lunch.

I just love my class!

I am a Transitional Kindergarten teacher. Transitional Kindergarten is a Pre-K program in California that allows 4 year old students (who are now 5), who didn't make the Kindergarten cut-off date, to attend a free Pre-school program. My students are so excited about learning! It brings a smile to my face to say that my 5 year old babies are as passionate about playing as much as they are about learning. It is my goal to make sure my Transitional Kindergarten students are provided interesting, exciting experiences that will allow them to learn while having fun.

My Project

My children are so lucky! They have been given the opportunity to take part in a fairly new program in California. Like I explained earlier, they are in a Transitional Kindergarten class. It's not quite Kindergarten where they are being expected to read, but they are getting academics within a developmental play program. The children think of our work as "play", but in reality it's practice with fine motor, letters/sounds, hands on math experiences, hands on science experiments, toys that make the kids build or create which facilitates problem solving and social-emotional development. Although we have many things, I really need different things to support their development.

More than any of my other other classes, this class LOVES to build with Legos and blocks that allow them to create many wonderful things from their imagination.

I would love to be able to provide them with the magnetic building tiles. They would be able to create houses, castles, and anything else their creativity can imagine.

Although I would love items for my kids to build with, I realized I'm lacking in my ability to have my kids explore with capacity and volume with water. It's so important to give kids a chance to see real life comparisons with volume and capacity. The toys I've requested would be amazing!

Lastly, I've asked for Magnatab boards for uppercase letters and numbers. Last year, I bought these for lowercase letters and the kids love practicing writing their letters with them. I would love to have the same thing for numbers and uppercase letters.
