My students need puppets, safe place rug, pillows, lounger, bench cubby, feeling toolkit and books to create a safe place to calm and regulate when feeling upset or overwhelm.
My students are 3 and 4 years students from Apopka, Fl who are developmentally delayed or are on the Autism spectrum. They are bright, resilient, full of happiness and energy. They are very hands on with their environment and eager to learn.
I have 12 exceptional students who are learning and excelling in social emotional and school readiness skills.
The children are able to identify their ABC's, so we are going to expand this into books and literacy through a literacy center that is safe and rewarding to them.
My Project
My project is to create a calm space area in my classroom using Conscious Discipline Feeling buddy’s to help teach the Pre-k students with Autism students self-regulation techniques. The Feeling buddies each have a different type of feelings on them, so they will learn about feelings. They will also learn techniques on how to calm down instead of melting down when they are upset. The area will be set up with the library area because my classroom is small and I want my library area to be a quiet calm area that they can go to relax in as well. They will have the chairs and couch to sit on and read. Social-Emotional Development is a big part of the Four year-old standards for children and easily a way I can modify for my children in my classroom.
It will have comfortable seating (like the safe place rug, pillows, lounger, and bench cubby), sensory items, and conscious discipline safe place items the students will be able to chose from to help them gain composure and then reengage with the class.
