Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a diverse, talented, and independent group of thinkers who are just learning about their place in the world. Nearly 97% of our students classify as low-income, and most, when they begin college, will be first-generation college students. This does not stop them from pursuing their goals by taking rigorous coursework, engaging in sports activities and participating in extracurriculars. I feel blessed and honored to teach my amazing group of youth. My goal is to create for them learning opportunities that are relevant, hands-on, and applicable to their lives. When they are in my classroom, I strive to help them reach their highest potential so they can do great things when they graduate into the real world.
My Project
My students want to learn to sew. We will work together to learn some basic hand stitching techniques. Students will use the sewing kits to learn different stitches. Using scraps we will create a book of different stitches. For example, we will practice a tack stick, basting stitch, running stitch etc. Students will bring in clothing from home that needs to be mended to work on, both by hand and with the sewing machine. Students will also use the sewing machines and their new hand stitching skills to mend the limited costumes that we have and create new garments for their end-of-year play.
We have the opportunity to not only allow them to broaden their design skills by using these sewing machines to bring their own designs to life, but the opportunity to provide them with the life skills of being able to fix their own clothes.
This is an everyday struggle for our students, and providing them this opportunity allows them to be better prepared for the real world.
