This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning during our school roll call our principal asks, "kindergarten where are you?" and my 22 little bugs scream with enthusiasm "RIGHT HERE READY TO LEARN!" Now my little kinder bugs are screaming for a rug!
Homemade milk crate seats flying into the library.
Tempura make shift door mats sliding across the room. Students slowly traveling on their single rug....No not a comedy show, just everyday happenings in our class where some of my students are sitting on the floor on my makeshift seats.
All my students are students of color from a high poverty neighborhood. Almost all students are learning English as their Second Language. Most of my student's parents do not speak English and have little means to help them learn English at home. Although they live and play in a high poverty and high crime neighborhood, my students are determined to come to school every day and learn even though the odds are against them. They use cooperation in small group work, are learning to be assertive without hurting others feelings, are taking on the responsibility of doing what is right, joining in others feelings by showing that they care.
My Project
We are requesting a rug for our classroom to use during our story time, calendar, and whole group lessons. My students need a cozy carpet to invite them to learn. We spend most of our day on the floor and my students would love to have a comfy space of their own while they take on the learning challenges of kindergarten.
This classroom rug will keep my kids off the floor, those slippery floor mats.
Minimizing distractions and increasing their focus is optimal for helping kinders learn and grow. If they had a rug to sit on, my students would be able to focus and learn more effectively. Thank you!
