Help me give my students their personal copy of The Outsiders. Students have to annotate, summarize & write thoughts in their books while we are discussing plot points.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are the definition of inquisitive learners that need diverse ways of learning. Their high energy has reignited my passion for teaching in a number of ways. They are witty, enthusiastic and refuse to have their circumstances define who they are as students. Our theme at school this year is Breakout. We are encouraging students to break out of the low or no expectations that many people have set for them and be the strong, beautiful, powerful students they are destined to become.
My Project
Growing up, I would always write notes in my books or on paper as I was reading. This helped me when studying and while having discussions about our reading. If each student is given their own book, they can use this opportunity to write their “first thoughts” and reactions to a very powerful & impactful novel. This novel is timeless & related to my students in a number of ways. I know that having a personal copy will encourage them to continue reading and maybe even follow up on the next book on their own. I want my students to become avid readers and if they have their own book, this could be the beginning.
