This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi. I am a 4th grade bilingual teacher at a Chicago Public School. And as everyone, I have been deeply saddened by the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina.
My kids are barely starting the school year this week. They will be coming in to a class that is ready for them and they in part will also be ready to be in class with their supplies and books. And, as I think about my students I start to think about the children that have been affected by Hurricane Katrina. "To think that they were probably getting ready to the idea of going back to school." I can't imagine what they are going through.
This week I plan to have some discussion with my students about this devastation, because I know that they will have something to say about it. I want to hear what they have been feeling after watching all of those graphic images on TV. I think talking about things like this always help reduce the fear they may have.
This week I also want to talk about character building. I want to build a community in my classroom. And I think by helping my students help the children affected they will be able to cope with their feelings and feel as though they are not helpless.
I know my students would love to help but they have very little for themselves that is why we turned to Donors Choose.
We would love to supply the children affected by Hurricane Katrina with a Classroom Care Package that includes all sorts of school supplies. My students and I will be very appreciative to all that help fund this very important proposal.
I know my students will be extremely excited to take part in writing letters to the victims and to those that have helped us help them. This will make them see that they can always do something to help out others. Thank You!
