Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Distance learning has been a challenge for our students, parents, and teachers as well. The challenges we all face vary in nature, but currently, it is undoubtedly an economic challenge for us all. Our school is a Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and supper.
My students are young scholars ready to tackle the 2020-2021 school year with excitement and perseverance, despite the obstacles they are facing.
My kids log into my Zoom class every day eager to learn. Before starting our instructional day, we take about 10-20 minutes to discuss what is going on in their life, around their neighborhood, our state and/or country.
My Project
My students want to do their best during distance learning, but have had difficulties when they don't have the supplies our school would normally supply. The lined paper will be used for word problems and Writing assignments in all subject areas that they can organize in their 3-ring binder. They need graph paper to work out long division, multiplication, area and perimeter problems. In addition, the composition books is where they will continue writing Math Notes they use for reference and review for tests. Often times, they can't find a pencil to do their assignments. If their pencil tip breaks, I have seen many of them ask parents to sharpen it by using a knife. So, pencil sharpeners and erasers are a must in order for them to do their work. Post-Its are a necessity so they can use them as reminder notes, margin notes for literature or tabs on what they are working on. I need notepads to teach my guided lessons and copy paper to print out their work packets, (from home) that I send to them via U.S. mail. The clasp envelopes will make it easy for me to mail out these supplies and more throughout the rest of the school year.
These school supplies are not a commodity, but rather a necessity for my students to succeed.
They have been creative in finding ways to improvise without many school supplies. I like to teach organizational skills and it has been difficult because we don't have the same supplies. If I want my kids to be successful, I need to make sure they have what they need.
