As a math teacher, I believe that it is important for children to investigate concepts and learn the relationships of numbers through hands on exploration rather than using a silly old textbook! Unfortunately, my school is not equipped with these necessary items.
My students are a group of eager learners with a wonderful appetite for education.
They are very active and learn best through doing and discovering. I also have several students with special needs for whom hands on manipulatives are imperative in their education and their ability to grasp concepts. My children are amazing learners who contribute in class and come up with new and innovative ideas of solving problems and finding solutions. Our school is very polarized. We have students from all socioeconomic levels and students from many different faiths and walks of life. We have an amazingly diverse population and our students embrace it and are supportive of one another and their differences. Giving back to these children is an honor each and every day! We have an extremely devoted staff who love to share ideas and motivate one another. I feel that this is known by our students who in turn challenge themselves daily.
My Project
The items I'm requesting are math manipulatives. These items will help make my math lessons more affective. In 4th grade we work with seven digit numbers, which requires several sets of place value blocks. I carefully chose these items as they can be used across several mathematical concepts. In order to prepare a student for success in school it is crucial to build a strong foundation of understanding in the primary and elementary grades. These manipulatives will ensure that the foundation is built. For today's children, providing a learning environment that is designed around discovery and collaboration is most beneficial to their learning styles. In addition to using these items whole group, they will especially come in handy when I do small group remediation. For children having difficulties grasping concepts, these items will support the basics they have and help them reach the next level in their learning.
