My students are a diverse community of learners that are learning to collaborate as musicians in an urban environment. We are fortunate to be in a school that supports the arts as part of a balanced curriculum. However, many of my students come from low income families and purchasing instruments for students may not be their highest priority.
With the switch to distance learning, my students are now faced with new challenges such as lack of access to devices, Internet, and materials.
Our city has been hard hit by the virus and many of my students are looking for ways to keep busy that are not strictly academic.
My goal with distance learning projects is to not only get necessary supplies to my kids but to even the playing field.
My reed broke! Where is the valve oil? I need cork grease! These are all normal things I hear day to day in my instrumental classroom. These are supplies that every music student will use and go through. This is not due to student misuse but to regular wear and tear.
Without knowing the extent of how long we will be learning from home, my young musicians do not have enough basic supplies to continue playing for much longer.
For them, these essential items are the difference between practicing and losing the skills they have developed. Without access to reeds, my saxophones and clarinets will not be able to generate a sound. No valve oil? My trumpet players valves will begin to freeze. These basic supplies will give them the tools they need to be successful at home.
