This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." (Berthold Auerbach) Have you experienced the magical feeling of working with others to create something beautiful? I would like my students to know the joy that comes from playing music together.

My students face significant educational challenges.

A high percentage are English Language Learners or have special learning needs (sometimes both), and many of their families struggle financially in spite of sometimes working multiple jobs.

Yet, the children are excited to come to school each day and are eager to learn, and their families are enthusiastic supporters of their children's education.

My Project

We currently have seven ukuleles in our music room, and all the students are eager to play them. With twenty-eight to thirty-two students in each class, there are not enough to go around, even with two students sharing one ukulele. I would like to have enough ukuleles to allow students to share with a partner, giving every student a chance to play each time their music class meets.

Having nine more ukuleles would allow every student to play an instrument every time they come to music class.

What's more, ukuleles are relatively inexpensive, so some of my students may even be able to purchase ukuleles for home use. This will allow them to continue playing music long after they've graduated and moved on to middle school.
