My students need colored scarves, music, and a parachute to explore different moods in music, in turn being able to internalize emotion.
Help us find ways to appropriately express ourselves!
BWS is an kindergarten through eighth grade inner-city public school in which the poverty levels and special needs are very diverse.
Our students excel in a learning environment that is hands-on, exciting, and has purpose. In our school, we have a self-contained classroom of students on the Autism Spectrum. Each of the students in this classroom have strengths that bring a smile to your face instantly! Our students range from non-verbal to high functioning Asperger's Syndrome. However, one common factor they all share is their love and passion for music and dance.
One of the problems facing our self-contained classroom is the inability to physically and/or verbally communicate feelings. To one, it may seem that students in our classroom do not know the difference between different emotions they may or may not be experiencing. Also, half the class is non-verbal and can't tell their teachers what they are feeling, what they may or may not need, or how they plan to get a task done. My students need colored scarves, music, and a parachute to explore different moods in music, in turn being able to internalize emotion. Due to the overwhelming response of the students in music class, these resources will help students explore the different moods and emotions present in music. In turn, students will be able to identify certain emotions, demonstrate through individual scarf dancing or group parachute activities, their understanding of these emotions, and begin to apply their response to their emotions in tasks of daily living.
A project such as this is important to apply life skills to a population of students who need them most.
With this project, students can work as individuals in their learning. They can work in small groups, in a peer teaching session with the parachute. Also, this project provides opportunities for reverse inclusion, in which the general education population can join in and serve as role models themselves. The benefits of this project extent far beyond the self contained classroom.
