A typical day of music at Virgil school involves 7 classes grades K-6, including chorus. Each class ranges from 15 to 27 students with no down time between classes. Within each class, students are constantly transitioning among singing, dancing, and playing instruments.
The students at Virgil are part of a small, rural school within a primarily farming community.
It is part of the Cortland City School District which is a focus school in a low socioeconomic area. Although there aren't many resources, there are many opportunities for students to participate and excel in music.
The students are energetic, enthusiastic, and share their love of music through singing, dancing, playing instruments, creating, and performing music.
My Project
The two oval rugs will be used in addition to the 10x12 square rug that currently exists in the room. The current rug, however, is not large enough to accommodate the large classes which means some students have to sit on the bare floor, individual carpet squares, or chairs. This creates inconsistency in seating arrangements and disruptions to the class flow during transitions.
The oval rugs will enable all students to be sitting on a rug and will allow more flexibility within transitions by not having to move chairs or carpet squares around which can be unsafe, uninviting and time consuming.
The oval rugs will improve our music classroom because they are colorful and inviting.
They will create a safer environment in that students will no longer be slipping on the carpet squares or tripping over the chairs during transitions.
They will provide warmth rather than sitting on the bare floor. Finally, having all students on the rugs, rather than using a combination of the current rug, carpet squares and chairs, cuts down on the amount of transition time during and between classes.
