My students need materials to clean and maintain their instruments, as well as small accessories like mouthpieces and reeds to continue making music every day.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at SMMS are truly some of the most hard working young men and woman you will find. They come to school every day with a motivation to learn and better themselves as individuals. While most face inconceivable challenges in their lives both at home and at school, they are full of grit and determination. When faced with strife, they respond with resilience, when faced with adversity they show compassion and tenacity. As the Band Director of this amazing population it is my great joy to help these students express themselves through music and the arts.
Through Musical performance, my students thrive, and their creativity and humanity shines like a beacon.
They are bright and talented students with an incredible thirst for knowledge. For some, band is the sole reason they come to school everyday. Through Music, I am not just teaching them how to play marches and ballads, but how to feel more freely and deeply. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day through creating an inclusive and welcoming classroom for all to feel safe and secure.
My Project
Reeds and mouthpieces are crucial to making music - while my school is able to provide instruments for students in band it is sometimes necessary to have students sharing, and this is only possible if every student has their own mouthpiece. My students are also learning about the proper care and maintenance of their instruments in order to ensure they will be available to use for years to come. This includes things like swabbing the instrument after each use, oiling valves, and greasing corks and slides.
Proper care and maintenance of instruments not only helps them to stand the test of time, but it teaches students responsibility and ownership.
A clean instrument is a happy instrument, and happy instruments make happy band kids!
