This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach around 550 students from kindergarten to 5th grade in an integrated arts classroom with a focus on supporting reading through the performing arts. So many students have suffered learning loss due to the pandemic. These students come from a variety of backgrounds. Many rely on school for their breakfast and lunch. There is a rich diversity in culture, ethnicities, and languages spoken in the home.

My Project

We started our choir this school year. We are also preparing for our school's first ever musical! The kids are so excited to audition and learn what's it's like to be in a play, especially after getting their first taste of performing for their families in our winter concert.

I want these students to have a wonderful experience for their first time putting on a musical.

For some students this will begin a lifelong love of the theater. Choir and drama experiences help to motivate even the most reluctant learners to want to be at school. I am so excited about this opportunity for my students!

The items requested in this project will help make our choir performance and our musical a big success. Many of my students are worried about having enough money to get their costumes. Getting this project funded will help to ease their worries.

The choir and musical in which the students will be participating gives them extra opportunities to practice reading during and after school, hopefully reducing some of the lost learning during the pandemic. I have watched many of these students, including some who started off in my room as non-English speakers, bloom and grow through the arts! These students gained confidence and language skills.
