Walking into our school; the diverse cultural, educational, and economic backgrounds are evident everywhere you look. We host a large population of English Language Learner students who are new to our country and we have one of the highest populations of free and reduced lunch students in our area. Because our students vary greatly in not only cultural and economic background but academics as well, our staff strives to create a fun, engaging environment for all.
You will never hear the words “I’m bored” uttered at our school.
We are home to a large variety of clubs to reach all interests of our students. Some examples of our clubs are; chorus, coding club, news crew, art club, Makerspace, run club, chess club and drama. Several of our families come from all over the world to serve our large research and technology companies in the area which leads to an increased interest in technology in school.
My Project
As technology is changing and becoming more prevalent in schools I want to make sure music stays up with the rush. Afterall, our school goal is for a 1:1 ratio of devices to students.
Where words fail, music speaks.
Music is such an intrinsic love for me and I hope to pass that along to all of my students. But not everyone learns or responds the same. Currently we are able to play rhythm instruments, explore drumming, and use our space to move and feel the music. The addition of the iPads will allow for another medium to explore and experience. There are apps to sharpen composition and aural skills, to dive into world music, and study various composers and influential musicians.
I hope these iPads will lead to rigorous independent research as well as allow for peer collaboration and sharing. They will be versatile enough to allow all grade levels access with age appropriate activities and apps.
