Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in our school are taught leadership skills, team building skills, and participate in a variety of after-school clubs Our children are of migrant families and due to Hurricane Irma, many are facing numerous challenges as their homes slowly get rebuilt. We have a dance program that is part of our performing arts. At the end of each year and during the holidays, our dance ensembles perform in the community for free, allowing others to experience the beauty of dance. We have students from kinder to sixth grade, and most all our students come from low-income families. Our students are eager to learn, courageous, teachable and grateful for what they have. Our scholars walk to and from school and are used to working hard during their long day at school. They are served breakfast, lunch, and dinner during a normal day and have the option to participate in a club after school such as; photography, sports, yoga, art, and computer.
My Project
We will be hiring a music teacher over the summer, so our scholars will have the opportunity to learn and play musical instruments such as bongos, snare, ukulele steel drums and electric drums. I would like to start an after-school music club in which we can play music-themed games such as the sing it shout it game, hot potato and have the opportunity to actually learn music through playing musical bingo, creative musical components, song burst, karaoke machine and electric drums. I can play drums and guitar so teaching the basic chords and rudiments using the lightweight rhythm drumsticks.My vision for the music project is to expose students to singing using the karaoke system and teach the entire class basic drum rudiments; such as paradiddles, marches and keeping time with the air drumsticks. I think the variety of drums such as electric, steel, conga, and bongos would offer the younger students a chance to explore their musical potentials. Students can also use the drop mix music game system on rainy days in my Physical Education classes to learn about composers, instruments, music appreciation and music history. A talent show or musical performance could take place at the end of the year to showcase scarf juggling, snare drum, djembe drums, ukulele, and singing with the microphones. Electric rock beat drumsticks would be perfect to help students with rhythm, self-confidence, musical expression, and harmony practiced using the microphones.
