I service the budding, little Mozartians from preschool age to 6th grade at two schools. As their music teacher, I'm always figuring out ways to lead them through "the mystery of music class” with joy full of surprises. Our students become fluent in Singlish as they enter the wondrous land of Sing-a-Lore each day. They come away dancing, singing, and moving to music comprehending the phrasing, structure, and timing behind it. They explore the textures of sound while learning the symbols, style, and art behind it. Their beat work causes their minds to expand, and their focus to increase while feeling its elements. They learn to incorporate all kinds of subjects from literature, spelling, math, history, and science while enjoying the beauty of the arts surrounding them.
Students will compete utilizing important life skills while they stretch, bend, dance, and move. The most important being patience and teamwork!
Many students today not only need fitness but deliberate, varied speed training.
Whole body movement will foster creativity and balance in their brains. They will learn coordination in larger muscle groups that will support smaller extremity precision. Students will learn to stretch out phrasing, pass the beat correctly, and produce shapes in high, medium, and low proximity to partners and other group members.
In groups of 5 or 6, my musical dance sports teams will pull stretch bands into formations and shapes. This will help them express themselves as they control their timing. Their phrasing will be enhanced by feeling the stretch in their movements, and doing so in partners and as a team. They can step into hula hoops rhythmically or while holding them lunge forward, creating shapes in conjunction with the stretch band. Tying stretch bands to the hoops, each will hold onto one forming a circular dance where teamwork is essential for balance. Different sized hoops will allow more creativity as students move through or use them as props in their dance while expressively holding balls and moving ribbons through them.
They will master rhythmic beat work through the discipline of controlled movement. They will hit the ground and receive assorted, colorful athletic balls with precision while feeling the different styles and meters of music. Forming a circle, they will pass the balls in challenging formations creating unity of rhythm and choreography.
Stretch bands will be used to form movements above their head, near their middle, to the side, and down on the ground while coming up with unique patterns that reflect the music.
