I teach in a low income school in central Kansas. My students love coming to school and are eager to learn. They have many different learning styles which I strive to meet.
Unfortunately outside of school their lives are often filled with chaos and trauma.
As the music teacher I get to teach every student in the building. It is my goal to help them escape the trauma while at school and learn to love school through music.
I want the music room to be a safe haven for them. We do many hands on activities. Teaching music today is a lot different than the way I learned as a child. Active learning is key!
We are starting a new unit in music to help students identify how music makes them feel. They will be using Legos to build a creation while listening to different types of music.
Having a Lego creation will help them to communicate their feelings.
It's so much easier for a student to describe something than to just speak on the spot. We are trying to get our students to learn how to communicate so they can be better citizens now and in the future.
We really appreciate any support you can give us in helping us get Legos for the music room! Most of our students don't have access to Legos outside of school, so it will be nice for them to have access at school.
