My school supports the local school district’s continuum of services for students with disabilities, ages 5- 21. The programs provide comprehensive educational and therapeutic support services to students who might otherwise require residential or other more restrictive placements due to the severity of one or more of the characteristics of the disability category of emotional and behavioral disorders (EBD).
My students truly emphasize the quote, "Abilities outweigh disabilities." They are focusing their time in school on learning how to successfully manage their behavior.
We work with each student individually to help them communicate what their personal goals and visions for their futures are, modify their behaviors; and integrate them into their home school.
As the school counselor, I provide intensive therapeutic support to meet the individual needs of each student.
The students at my school have been identified as having either severe emotional behavior disorders or autism spectrum disorder. The materials will make a difference by allowing me to provide percussion intervention.
Percussion intervention has shown to significantly improve attention to task in children with autism and increase their overall level of engagement with caregivers.
Group music has shown to provide students with social challenges an alternative way to communicate and be in community with others without the worry of being "good at music".
Drumming provides the natural ability of rhythm to calm the human mind and body. Through the conscious use of tempo, instrument choice, and timbre, percussion intervention has proven to help students release excess energy and become calmer - naturally.
Percussion intervention will provide a tremendous benefit to the students served at my school.
