Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in a high poverty area and come from many different backgrounds. For many of my students, the only exposure they have to music and the arts is at school.
When my students come to music, they enter an environment where it is safe to learn and explore the different aspects of music.
I teach at a school in which a lot of students are learning to speak English. Music, however, is a place for those students who are struggling with the language to feel more at home and at peace because music is considered a "universal" language.
My Project
I am asking for many items that will help facilitate movement in my music classroom. These items include a large stretchy band, a parachute, streamers that students wear on their wrists and many more smaller items. There are also items such as Play-Doh and Tubaloo's that allow me to better assess students' understanding of musical concepts.
In the music classroom, movement is imperative to students' musical experience, and helps students to be more engaged in our whole lesson.
Many students also learn better by using their hands, and manipulatives such as Play-Doh and Lummi Sticks are a wonderful resource for students to get their hands on to practice rhythms.
