Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Music classrooms are one of the most inspirational places on a school campus. I teach music to all students in a Title 1 elementary school, over 75% Hispanic, where a permanent music teacher and a well-maintained program has not existed for over 3 years.
Our district is building many schools that are immediately supplied with the best of modern equipment. Our school is behind the times, with no hint of modernization whatsoever, except for whiteboards. Morning announcement ceremonies currently use an out-dated PA system attached to a portable CD player, prone to skips, time delays while searching for tracks, etc. Small steps to make the classroom run like other state-of-the-art classrooms in the district will no doubt give the students a sense of pride.
Although the classroom is in need of many resources, a portable sounddock and an iPod will allow the classroom to more efficiently play digitized music, rather than searching through catalogs of discs and searching for track numbers. The organizational possibilities and building of a digital music library will make finding and playing music for any occasion much more effective and time-efficient.
A classroom that has modern amenities speaks volumes to students, suggesting that the school cares and is interested in providing them with the best resources, and that a teacher who procures making a classroom appealing has a long-term commitment to their education. Students in this community are accustomed to transiency, shifting from school to school, and have witnessed the inequalities between neighboring schools. Providing modern resources addresses the morale of those students and promotes buy-in from every student.
