I teach general music in the south side of Chicago to students in grades K-8. Music classes for grades K-2 include listening to and evaluating music in addition to singing and performing on instruments. Students are enthusiastic about learning about music. Children at this age are especially enthusiastic about listening to a good story and music. The music room does lack some essential resources and supplies however. My classroom has very few storybooks and accompanying CDs relating to music that I am able to read or play to the children. This is especially important as I teach in a school that is seeking to raise reading scores, and to increase student vocabulary. For this proposal I am requesting a total of 6 children's books with accompanying CDs which will be used by all students in grades K-2. The items requested include children's books relating to music. These will be read to and by the students. The requested items will supplement the music curriculum in use at my school. Items requested include the children's books A Tisket A Tasket with Ella Fitzgerald on the CD, What A Wonderful World featuring Louie Armstrong on the CD, Mama Don't Allow, The Orchestra, and more. The requested items will be used in lessons planned along the National Music Education Standards and will be reused by music students at my school for years. Thank you for your generosity.
