Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school serves over 900 students in grades K-8 who live in a historic area of the city. Our staff consists of teachers who are dedicated to instilling our motto of "Si se puede" (Yes, we can) in all students.
Music is new to our school and students are excited about the variety of musical opportunities being provided to them.
This is the second year of having a music education program which promotes creativity while meeting National and State Standards in Music Education.
All students deserve to be provided with opportunities to discover what music means to them. My students are learning that music can be one way to bring a group of people together. It is a way to define identity, something that people of all age groups can use to express themselves.
Offering creative outlets provides balance to all ages - at home, work and in the community. Music education has a tremendous impact on students' academic, social and emotional well-being. Students' music experiences remain with them as adults and truly enriches their lives.
My Project
It has been an amazing experience to watch our music program grow the past year and a half. We have been able to create, respond, and connect to music with iPads, our voices, Boomwhackers, guitars, ukuleles, ribbon wands, parachutes and miscellaneous rhythm instruments. Students are developing their aural and literacy skills daily, and we need music stands to continue to help them develop their creativity.
Students need a few more music stands so we don't have to share three or four to a stand while practicing and working on projects.
Just like K-12 classrooms have desks so students can complete written assignments, music classrooms need music stands so students can practice and perform music. A music stand is a necessity for all musicians learning to play a musical instrument. The music stands for this project will be used by third through eighth grades.
These music stands also help save space and can be folded up for storage when they are not being used. They will be used for different activities - not only for reading music, but also as a space to place visual aids such as fingering charts or chord charts for those that need it. This project will provide our program with a complete half set so that students can share with a partner during the school day, and all band members will be able to have their own stand during after school practices.
