My students need a listening center for guided listening, mallets to play the instruments we have, and a pocket chart as a visual reminder of their behavioral choices.

My students are enthusiastic and in great need of an expressive outlet. Music can be the very outlet through which they manage the frustrations and challenges they face once they leave the school building. My goal is for them to be both informed consumers and intentional producers of music.
Our school serves students from prekindergarten through sixth grade, and I teach them all!
These young musicians are full of personality, energy, and ideas. They are eager to learn about musicians from the past and present, and discover their own musical voice. They need a lot of guidance to channel that energy through a positive avenue and produce something meaningful and worthwhile.
I use a five-step system as part of classroom management, with each step being accompanied by a specific consequence. The pocket chart will serve as a visual reminder to students, silently motivating them to make positive behavioral choices. We currently have resonator bells, but no mallets with which to play them! We have been making due with unsharpened pencils, however, as the pencils were not designed for this purpose, the coating begins to flake off, and they do not last very long. More importantly, the bells cannot be played well with pencils. With proper mallets, the students will be able to have an authentic experience. The listening center will give students a chance to experience and learn about music from other times and cultures. Students will be guided through various genres of music and encouraged to respond genuinely. Classes will be split into two groups, allowing me to interact with smaller groups and build better relationships with students.
The majority of the instruments we have are in poor condition.
I believe it would be a boost in morale for students to have something new that they can be proud of in their music room. “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.” - Victor Hugo
