Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My high school is located in a large urban area where a majority of the students are considered low income. Most of my music students do not have access to private music instruction outside of the school setting. They come to high school without a solid understanding of many music concepts. Despite these challenges, our music students in grades 9-12 are very interested in the music topics that are covered in their Theory, Harmony and A.P. Music Theory classes. Many of them will continue the study of music at the college level.
Many of my music students ask for theory workbooks to practice what they have learned in class and develop their music understanding. We are creating a student resource center to provide students with access to music study material that will help build their musicianship skills. Most of my students do not have access to this kind of music study material outside of the school setting.
The resources that we would like to add to our student resource center will be helpful to students at many levels of musical understanding. The resources would include items such as study charts, flash cards, and workbooks. These kinds of resources will have an immediate impact on the musical knowledge of my students. The resource center is important because it gives my students an opportunity to take responsibility for the challenges that they face in their music learning. Many of the concepts that are taught in music are abstract to them because of their limited experience in music. Extra resources are vital for their continued growth in the study of music.
