My Students

In our school we do not provide a music class for PreKindergarten kids. Fortunately, I am a piano player and have a some knowledge of music. I would like to improve my music instruction for next year by adding rhythm and dancing to our singing.

We are an incredibly wonderful and hilarious group of 4 and 5 year old students living and attending school in a small, rural community.

The other elementary students attend school in another community, but we are fortunate enough to attend school with the big kids at the high school. We love the big kids and they love us. We go to school all day long and we are SMART, SMART, SMART! Our teacher likes to try new things all the time and she considers it part of her job to surprise and delight us everyday. We never know what the day will hold.

My Project

I envision taking the students to the gym or outside with the boom whackers to practice basic rhythm and sound experimentation. I intend to use the rhythm band set in the classroom along with our CD and Internet subscriptions to enhance our music participation. I intend to use the multicultural instruments in the same manner and to enhance my lessons particularly on my author study of Jan Brett and Other Lands.

HMusic participation provides a unique opportunity for literacy preparation.

Whether the children are singing, playing, or listening, teachers direct them to listen and hear in new ways which exercises their aural discrimination. Playing instruments and adding movement to the lessons teaches children about sequential learning which is essential in reading comprehension. Plato once said that music “is a more potent instrument than any other for education”.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
