This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Have you ever had to sit on the cold, hard floor for 50 minutes? That's what my students have to look forward to when they come to music.
The students at my school love music and love coming to class.
The students are mostly African-American, and come from low-income or single parent households. My school is a public Title One elementary school near Baltimore City in Maryland. The students (and school) have limited resources, and would love to have a comfortable place to sit during Music.
My Project
The Kindergarten and 1st graders always say that the chairs hurt them, and their fingers are constantly being squished. A rug would make them feel more comfortable and avoid many injuries. The rug also ties into music, which allows for many musical activities and games to be done with the rug. The students would love the bright colors and comfortable feel of this rug. Special needs students will find this rug very accommodating as well. The older students would also benefit from this rug, as a "calm down" area.
The students at my school are so willing to learn.
The music program has been in disrepair for many years, and as a first year teacher I am looking for ways to improve their experience (and comfort level) in the music room. With this new rug, a whole new world of options will be opened, and many little fingers will be saved.
