Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students don't have the technology resources at home, and are falling behind in this technological driven world; however, through my music class, I hope they can express themselves through music technology, learning technology skills along with digital music composition.
Most of my students have not had the opportunity to embrace such technology for their education.
I would like to put iPads in their hands and allow them to express themselves through their music compositions. My students are mostly English-language and English as a second language learners, living in poverty in a low income urban school. They are highly motivated, enthusiastic, and eager to learn new things. Our school is a Fine and Performing Arts school with no music funds.
My Project
With an iPad, students can record their individual performances, work with a partner, or practice using an instrument while I record their work. Connecting it to a projector, or gather around the iPad to watch and listen instantly for review. This is a great opportunity to discuss what is working, what needs improvement and ways to improve. Students will be able to post pictures and videos, discoveries and questions from music class on our music class blogspot and share what they have learned with the school, family, and friends. We will be able to utilize the technology in our music class to access endless amount of resources, such as video of live performances, listen to audio tracks, and interviews with artists via Skype. Lastly, students can search online for musical sites, ideas, cool songs, bands and/or performances.
First and foremost, an iPad is a user-friendly tool that my music students will find easier to use than traditional computers.
It will change students' lives in a number of ways. For example, students can become better performers by assessing themselves using the iPad to record video and audio. Students can collaborate together on a project to improve their social skills, learn the skills of today's technology, and access online resources for research-based units to improve student learning.
