My middle school students are amazing! They are a part of a small, rural school district that strives to achieve on all levels. Like many rural communities, we have been affected by the lingering economic situation. Our school has a very high rate of students participating in the free and reduced price lunch program. Many families have lost their income because of businesses closing and jobs being scaled back. Resources at school have also been cut drastically because of declining enrollment when families look for employment elsewhere.
My Project
Mindfulness is the process of paying attention to what is happening right now in our own experience in a curious and open way. All 5 senses are used during mindfulness. Singing bowls are great practice tools for listening in the moment. Students learn mindful listening with sounds and silence.
Adding music to mindfulness practice reduces student stress.
School is extremely stressful for all students. Add on living in poverty, uncertainty and trauma, a recipe for anxiety, stress, and escalation is created. Students cannot learn while they are stressed or suffering from debilitating anxiety.
With mindfulness, we can start to overcome these stresses together. Students are motivated to practice mindfulness by the tones and vibrations singing bowls create.
Please help me introduce mindfulness listening tools, rhythm and breathing exercises, and soft tones with the signing bowl set. With mindfulness practice and these bowls to help, my students will begin to learn how to focus, de-stress and regulate their minds and bodies so that they can overcome their many challenges. My dream is to have my students start these practices in middle school and use them for the rest of their lives.
