My students need tickets to attend the Musical Instrument Museum in Phoenix, Arizona. This STEM + music tour offers an opportunity to really explore music and how it relates to science and mathematics.
The students of Havasupai are determined, creative, and ready to learn. They come to school with a great attitude, no matter their circumstances at home. School is a safe place for them to learn and be themselves.
Our students come from a variety of economic backgrounds, and some of our students don't have the opportunity to travel to many different places over their summer vacation or breaks.
Some have never even been out of our rural town located in western Arizona.
I teach at a Title One School, where 70% of our students are offered free and reduced lunch, and 100% of the students receive free breakfast; this is the highest percentage in our school district.
Because of our district budget, there have been cuts made to our arts programs at all 5 of our elementary schools. Currently, our students only receive 12 weeks of music education.
My Project
The 4th grade classes at our school would like to take a field trip to Phoenix and visit the MIM . This opportunity would give them a chance to learn about musical instruments and how music connects with science and mathematics. This interdisciplinary experience will allow for deeper, more meaningful learning.
When our students visit this museum, they are given the chance to explore music of the world and the different ways that music is created.
"At the Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) students explore the physics of sound production and how musical instruments can be classified. Students look inside a piano and observe MIM’s giant octobasse, which plays notes that are not audible to human ears! Participating in a drum circle and playing instruments in the Experience Gallery, such as the electronic Theremin, help reinforce concepts of vibration and sound waves."
We want to inspire our students to be creative and use their imagination in order to bring inspiration to the world around them. We believe this is a great opportunity for them to truly be more innovative and explore this subject that they would not normally get the chance to explore. Being that our school is a community of many cultures, it is important that our students can find ways to connect.
"I think music in itself is healing. It's an expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everybody loves music."
