Music Makes Our Hearts Sing: Phase II

Help me give my students an opportunity to perform for their peers the songs they have been working on. The requested microphones will allow their acoustic guitars and voices to be heard.

My Students

My students are highly motivated and creative young people who live and attend high school in the city of Newark, New Jersey. Our students come from all over the world: from the city of Newark, the continent of Africa, the Caribbean, North, Central, and South America. They share a love of learning that inspired them to apply to a rigorous public school that endeavors to defy the stereotypes about urban students and urban education.

Our students are full of hope and have high expectations of themselves.

They are thriving as they are challenged to push past their comfort levels and explore their potential. At our school, students have an opportunity to take college classes while they are still in high school. Those who are successful can earn their high school diploma and an Associate’s Degree through a college partnership that helps us to provide an excellent education. This opportunity is propelling our students into a future that allows them to test their limits and realize their dreams.

My Project

Our school does not have a music program, so five years ago I purchased several acoustic guitars through generous contributors from DonorsChoose and began a Music Club after school. Over the years we have added several instruments and we now have over 30 students coming after school to learn and play together. Every day I get students requesting new instruments to try. I now have two students who want to learn to play the violin.

Several of the students in the club now want to perform for their peers.

Performing builds confidence and increases motivation when learning music. When young people share their music with their peers, it helps foster connections and builds community, important especially now that we are all together after more than a year of remote learning. We need microphones so the singers and acoustic guitar players can be heard from the stage. The mic stands and clips will allow the microphones to be positioned in front of the acoustic guitars. The cables are used to attach the microphones to amplifiers. Although we would love to eventually acquire a true sound system, this equipment would at least give the students a beginning chance to be heard from the stage of the large cafeteria at school.
