Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach STEAM to K - 5 students in the makerspace at a dual-immersion school in East Palo Alto, CA. I teach in a tough neighborhood where 94 percent of students qualify for free or reduced-priced lunch. They're hungry; not only physically but mentally. Also, a majority of my students are homeless, living below the poverty line, and/or are first-generation students. And what I provide out of the makerspace is a safe place for learning, living, and experimenting. Confidence is built, along with robots and kites, but more importantly, we're building a community.
I've seen my students make leaps and bounds, academically and socially, because we as a school support a positive mindset that fosters creativity, open-mindedness, and fearlessness.
Every day their curiosity brings them down into my rabbit hole. There, I introduce and put into practice, concepts and tools that are foreign to my community. We are in the heart of the technological world and I want my students to be the "music makers." They deserve it!
My Project
Studies show that music enhances kids' development and cognitive skills, and what a better way to do such a thing than learning to DJ at our school. My students will learn about the importance of teamwork, problem solving, music theory, and math, all while creatively expressing themselves in fun and exciting ways. The makerspace is a perfect, and safe place for students to collaborate and share personal interests with others, all while also connecting on a different level/wavelength with their peers.
The world is more than a computer/phone screen or what is in a book, it's out there to be grasped and enjoyed and creatively curated with the use of music.
I want to empower my students and expose them to every possibility available. So if I do my best, they, in turn, will do the same because I am modeling behavior I want to instill in them. And what I want to instill is for them to be life-long learners.
