I recently completed my seventh year of teaching, and I am constantly amazed by what my students are able to achieve. I currently teach in an urban school district where the majority of our students come from low-income families. My school has almost 800 students and we constantly have new students joining us. Our students face many challenges at home and in the classroom but at my school the teachers go above and beyond to help their students succeed.
In the music room, all of my students are able to flourish.
My kids sing, dance, play, and create on a daily basis. Students of all levels find success in music. If you walk into my classroom you will see a room filled with engaged students working collaboratively and supporting each other.
My Project
This project aims to stock the music room with literature and puppets that will make folk songs come to life. When I sing to my students, stories like Risseldy, Rosseldy and Over in the Meadow will be more engaging when paired with a picture book and animal hand puppets. Students will be able to use these materials to aid in their own singing. Students will also get to learn through play by using the hand puppets to help sing the songs and tell the stories.
All of my students love being read to and in music class those stories come to life on a deeper level through song.
John Feierabend, a leader in the field of music education, worked with artists to make music come to life through the picture books in this project. His materials are highly acclaimed by music educators all across the country and I would like for my students to have access to them to help further their music understanding and explore their creative sides through play.
