I teach in a classroom where we are excited about what we do.
We are expressive, critical thinkers.
We take risks, we learn from our mistakes, and we celebrate our successes.
I teach orchestra to approximately 140 students in grades 6-8. We are learners and musicians. We are excited about what we do, and we use music to explore history, science, literacy, and other arts. My students are racially and socioeconomically diverse. But they all have one thing in common. They are aspiring musicians.
My Project
In my orchestra classroom, we practice Comprehensive Musicianship. This means that students do not simply learn how to "play a bunch of songs." My students learn music theory, music history, and make connections between their world and the music that they are playing.
I would like to provide more opportunities for large-group interactive activities in the orchestra classroom.
These whiteboards will allow students to practice music vocabulary, note-reading, and literacy. They will allow for my students to interact with one another while learning. In essence, these whiteboards will allow students to connect with each other and with the music in my classroom more easily. Furthermore, they will give me easy and fast insight into my students' understanding--what a gift!
I am constantly looking to improve my teaching practice, and with that, looking for tools that will enhance my students' experience in the classroom. I truly believe that these simple whiteboards will be transformative for students in the orchestra room.
