I teach at a Title I school with over 90% of our students on free and reduced lunch. The majority of our students are ELL students with Spanish being their primary language at home. We are also home to a program for students with severe and significant needs. These students are non verbal, have significant cognitive delays and many have life threatening medical conditions.
Music is the one place where everyone is learning a new language!
This levels the playing field for our newcomers, as well as our students who have grown up in the United States. Music is also a class that our severe needs students are able to attend and participate in a general education setting.
Our class has been working on a modern band unit. I found an old keyboard and we've added drums, guitar and ukulele. My student's engagement is through the roof! Unfortunately, some of our drumsticks have been broken due to some over zealous drummers and we are currently in need of some replacements.
Our keyboard players are in desperate need of a keyboard stand (sitting on the floor isn't helping their technique).
My students have learned three and four chord songs to accompany their peers on guitars and ukuleles.
I can not believe the natural talent so many of my students have. DonorsChoose has given them so many opportunities they wouldn't normally have. Thank you!
