My Students
My twelve students are kindergarten and first grade, all with some level of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Some are verbal, some not, and some in between. Their abilities and needs vary so widely, it can be hard to find activities that they will all be able to access.
These kids are silly, smart, creative, and truly incredible little people.
They amaze me with what they can do every day and the ways they have discovered to interact with a world that can be challenging at times for them to navigate.
My Project
We love dancing and singing in my classroom. I want my students to be able to participate to the fullest, in any way they can or desire. Their favorite song is the Hokey Pokey and we sing it almost every day.
For many of my students, it would mean the world to have another way to interact with the music.
Rhythm can be helpful with learning in so many ways, from learning syllables to how to count items in math lessons.
We also have a variety of cultures and backgrounds represented in the classroom and to have an instrument from a peer's culture would provide an exciting opportunity for another connection to the world around them.
