The rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina has not been easy. Our students have a challenge ahead of them to rebuild and renew a city, culture and a people. The Arts are crucial to building collaborative and creative individuals. Music education is a crucial element to bridging that gap.
Our school is built on the idea that character plus intelligence is true education.
We work to help students learn the value of hard work, responsibility and integrity. We are unique in the fact that when students enter the program, they sign a contract, and are required to come to school from 7:25 am until 4:30 pm in and on select Saturdays. It is also unique in the fact that all the students in the school are required to take instrumental music and are in the band program. The music program is designed to use practical and culturally relevant skills to teach character to all the students in the school. Our school is one of the only schools in our region where all the students are in band. This makes finding the resources to meet all the needs of the program challenging, but not impossible.
The materials requested will open the doors for our students to many wonderful opportunities in Music. Quality instruction, quality materials and a culture of learning is critical for students to be grounded with a strong foundation in music fundamentals. These materials will provide the quality instruments, reeds, and other materials to take our students to the level needed to lead our city in the future.
The renewal and rebuilding of a city is more than buildings and homes.
The heart of a city lies in the lives of the people, the culture in the neighborhoods and the values of its citizens. Our students have the potential to lead this city to heights not seen in recent history. An impact of that magnitude can only be reached with a well rounded education of the whole student; mind, body and spirit. Our program can only continue to provide a quality education to students with your help.
