Music education is extremely important in a young person's life. Every child’s education should include the benefits of music instruction. Due to budget cuts, music education is often left up to the classroom teacher. Being that I have become my students’ music teacher, I need some help.
My classroom is made up of 30 students from various economic and cultural backgrounds.
66% of my students receive free/reduced lunch. Some students are brand new to the United States, others have been living in the neighborhood since birth.
It is a joy to teach such diverse children. In my classroom alone, five languages are represented. My school has a fabulous English as a Second Language program, so newcomers to the United States are often sent to my school.
It would be wonderful to share music from each student's culture with the rest of the class. I feel it will be an incredible experience to share the various languages represented in my classroom with each other. It will definitely strengthen our classroom community.
My Project
Being that so many of my students have English as their second language, music is a great way to introduce new ideas in the classroom. In order to do this, I need one iPod touch and two Sony CD Boomboxes with Apple iPod docks.
These products will allow me to share music and stories on a daily basis in all different languages. The CD player will not only act as an iPod dock that will amplify the sound for all to hear, but as a listening work station. Having four sets of Koss headphones connected to the CD players will allow students to enjoy music, stories, and even individualized ESL activities.
As I said, every child’s education should include the benefits of music instruction.
Being that so many of my students are English as a Second Language learners, I believe having music in each child's own language will help build a sense of community in the classroom. Having the use of an iPod touch and CD player/docking system will greatly improve my abilities to provide that service to them. Thank you for this opportunity!
