"Ago?" "Ame!" ("Are you ready to learn?" "Yes, we are ready to learn!") My music students are familiar with this call and response which, borrowed from the folkloric traditions of West Africa loosely translates to "Listen!" and "I am listening." The students at my school are comfortable with multiple languages. Mandarin, Spanish, Urdu, Russian, Arabic, and Uzbek make up the first languages of most of my students. Some are still learning English, but that doesn't stop them from having fun in the music room.
It is no doubt that their capacity to understand two or more languages attract them to music.
A community of immigrants, the students have a wonderful opportunity to bring a bit of their musical culture to our school, sharing their unique experiences and learning to appreciate others' contributions. Our school is large, around thirteen hundred students, with seventy percent of them qualifying for free lunch. Recently, our music department received the best gift music students could ever get - a music room. No longer do the music teachers have to push into the crowded classrooms bringing only as much as we can carry. Now students have a large space dedicated entirely to music!
My Project
My band students are awesome! In addition to rehearsing during the school day and at least once a week during their lunch, they often practice after school, before school, and on the weekends. They even return at the end of the summer the week before school starts to get a jump start on their music. The rehearsals are long and tiring. Extra water and food throughout the rehearsals are a necessity.
Most of my students qualify for free lunch and aren't able to bring snacks.
Since we are practicing after school hours, the school can't provide them with food. And while those who are able to bring food are always willing to share with those without (because my students are that great) I would like to be able to offer healthy snacks to everyone. This will be the 3rd or 4th time I've done a project through DonorsChoose.org for healthy snacks for my band students and these snacks are ALWAYS appreciated (and eagerly consumed!) by my students. I am extremely grateful to those donors of the past snack projects and hope to be able to continue to fund more healthy food for my students.
These snacks will be saved and used throughout the year for these extra rehearsals. And maybe, if a student ever comes to school hungry, even if they aren't in the band, they'll know where they can go for a small, healthy snack.
