My students need ukuleles to create a music enrichment class to teach students how to read music and to give them experience with learning an instrument.
My students are a sweet, fun-loving bunch! They come from diverse backgrounds, but work hard to include everyone in both teams and in the class culture. They thirst for knowledge and seek to be well-rounded individuals.
More than half our sixth grade class did not have the opportunity to learn an instrument through our band program this year.
Many are interested in learning an instrument but do not have the means or opportunity to do so. When I suggested buying ukuleles for them to learn on, the kids were very enthusiastic and excited at the prospect of learning to read music and play an instrument.
My Project
Music as an integral part of a well-rounded education. In the weekly band hour, we want to provide our students who were unable to participate in band with the opportunity to learn to play a musical instrument. We have volunteers to help teach students the ukulele and the teachers have already started laying the foundation by teaching the basics of music theory and how to read music.
The ukuleles would be used weekly as part of a music enrichment program to help students who would otherwise not have access to music education.
Research has shown that music education provides a wide variety of benefits for students. It helps them develop self-confidence, creative thinking, discipline, and imagination. It has also been linked to higher aptitudes in reasoning, language, and academic achievement. Music education also keeps kids engaged in school. They really look forward to it. Our students are already excited at the prospect of learning to play the ukuleles!
