My Students

My students are young men on the autism spectrum with significant communication and intellectual disabilities, and often additional diagnoses like Down Syndrome. They are a spirited bunch, each with a unique perspective on the world. Like neurotypical young men, they like to play basketball and music.

None of these young men have verbal speech and rely on sign language and picture symbols to communicate.

We use music in the classroom daily as a learning tool as well as a motivator.

My Project

My students use music as both a learning tool and a motivator. We listen to songs to learn lesson content, such as counting skills, coin identification, or steps needed to complete routine hygiene tasks. We also listen to music during fitness routines to make our workouts more fun and to music as part of our daily mindfulness practice.

With a multi-CD disc system with remote control, I could switch between needed songs more efficiently without having to take time away from instruction to remove one disc and insert another.

My students have intense needs and keeping their attention is a challenge. Because they need extra attention, reducing downtime and distraction allows them more opportunities to learn.
