Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

For the 2006-2007 school year, I have a very special group of students. They are all boys, ages 7-10 and they all have Autism. I work in a high needs school, in the Bronx, and have seven students. Every day is different in my classroom, depending on the needs of my students. Sometimes, I'm teaching how to tie shoes or how to make a sandwich, while other days we are working on reading aloud or just following along in a story as I read it. I have found that it is very difficult for my students to follow along in a story, but when it is put to music or with simple rhythms, they get the hang of it. (I taught my students their phone number using funky rhythms to help them remember all the numbers). Therefore, I am requesting an instrument called an autoharp. I have been trying to learn the guitar, but have realized that it's not one of my strengths! However, an autoharp easily allows a full chord to be played effortlessly by both myself and the students! I believe that having this instrument will truly enhance and motivate my students to listen, read and learn (without them even realizing it!)
